Florida domicile playbook
Florida is the primary playbook: Declaration of Domicile, FLHSMV, and a mailbox you already own.
- A Florida address is not a defense file. Presence, DL, voter, and severed ties are.
- New Florida residents generally must obtain a Florida driver license within 30 days of becoming residents.
Step 1 of 6
Address & mail
Lock a Florida address you actually control. Bring your own mailbox if you already have one.
- — Choose a mailbox path: connect existing, enter manually, or join the partner waitlist
- — Enter the Florida street, unit/PMB, city, and ZIP exactly as printed
- — Record mailbox ID / PMB number
- — USPS Form 1583 (CMRA authorization) — not started, pending notary, or complete
- — Optional: inbound webhook / email alias for scanned mail (Connect preview)
Step 2 of 6
Physical presence
Florida wants a real resident, not a PDF. Plan a trip, sleep there, and sit for the DL appointment.
- — Plan a Florida trip (dates + city near a driver-license office)
- — Book hotel / short-term rental nights and keep the confirmation
- — Mark Florida nights on the presence calendar
- — Pick a DL appointment window while you are in-state
- — Save boarding passes, fuel, or rental-car receipts
Step 3 of 6
Driver’s license & vehicle
Florida generally expects a DL within 30 days of becoming a resident. Bring identity, SSN, and two proofs of Florida address. Some offices are picky about PMB wording.
- — Read official new-resident driver-license requirements
- — Gather identity documents (passport or birth certificate, SSN, proof of address)
- — Set an appointment date (we store the date — we do not book the DMV)
- — After the visit: upload the new license image to the vault
- — Vehicle title / registration in the new state
- — Update auto insurance address (if you have a vehicle)
Step 4 of 6
Voter registration & banking
Voting and banking are classic domicile facts. Update them — and tell W-2 payroll the truth.
- — Register to vote in Florida
- — Generate and send a voter-registration cancellation to the former state
- — Update your primary bank’s address of record
- — Update at least two more institutions (brokerage, credit cards, credit union)
- — File IRS Form 8822 change of address (federal — does not change domicile by itself)
- — Optional: USPS change of address / NCOA
- — W-2: talk to HR / payroll about state withholding and a work-location change
Step 5 of 6
Severing ties
Domicile is a web of facts. Cancel or re-address the old-state ties so an auditor does not find them for you.
- — Select the ties you still have in the former state
- — Generate downloadable letters with your name, address, and dates
- — Send the letters and toggle each to sent
- — Optional: upload send receipts (email PDF, certified-mail stub) to the vault
Step 6 of 6
Declaration of Domicile
Florida’s Declaration of Domicile is filed with the clerk of the circuit court in the county of your Florida address. We generate a ready-to-sign packet. We do not e-file.
- — Choose the Florida county of your mailing address
- — Download the ready-to-sign packet (cover sheet + field summary + filing checklist)
- — File with the county clerk (you or your CPA — not NomadShield)
- — Upload the stamped copy to the evidence vault

Estimate, not advice. NomadShield is a compliance workflow tool — not a CPA, law firm, or tax-advice product. Domicile is facts-and-circumstances. We do not file government forms.
